"Sean Aaron is a big, fundamental goalie who managed to stop an amazing number of the shots he faced last season. Joe Banno is an even bigger goalie who was able to stop an even higher percentage of the shots he saw last year. Together, they're looking to take two programs to the next level while vying for 2012 first-team All-America honors."

Lacrosse Magazine, Aug. 26, 2011: "Defense Returning: The Squirrels were a stingy bunch, and with the return of Joe Banno (65.0 sv%) and two poles in front of him, they should be equally efficient this season...Stud Factor: Banno is a game-changer in net and scores big stud points."

Lacrosse Magazine, Mar. 10, 2011: "...there's a 6-foot-4, 265-pound reason I will not take Denison in this contest. I'm starting to believe Joe Banno could be the best goaltender in the country, especially after his clutch, 19-save performance against Cabrini."

Inside Lacrosse, Season Preview: Haverford, Feb. 18, 2011: "One goal is all that separated the Haverford Fords from an appearance in the NCAA Division III Final Four last season... Behind [LSM Dillon] Hamill, he's joined by junior netminder Joe Banno, another of the team's preseason All-Americans. Taking up plenty of the cage at 6-4, 265-pounds, Banno allowed only 7.65 goals per game last season, stopping 57.5% of the shots he faced."

Lacrosse Magazine, Aug. 23, 2009

The Delaware County Daily Times, May 10, 2009: "Salisbury head coach Jim Berkman said...'it wasn’t like we didn’t do some good things in the first half. We had 28 shots and they had 10. I know it was a 6-4 game, but their goalie played out of his mind.'...The Gulls knotted the game but struggled to build a substantial lead against 6-4, 263-pound freshman goalie Joe Banno. The big guy made seven point blank saves in the first quarter alone to keep the Fords within 3-1 entering the second frame."

Lacrosse Magazine, May 8, 2009: "Jim Berkman thought the Gulls had a shot at a home seed in this one, but he's comfortable with the pairing, especially since he was able to take a peek at the Black Squirrels during the Centennial tourney. Catching the Salisbury coach's eye was Joe Banno, the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Haverford goalie who alters every angle he plays."

No. 11 Haverford College defeated No. 8 Washington College 8-5 on March 28 for Haverford’s first win against Washington in the teams’ last 20 meetings. However, this losing streak was not the main point Haverford coach Mike Murphy emphasized to his team. “We have a lot of freshmen who have never lost to Washington,” he said.

The team did not do anything differently to prepare for this game that ended up putting Haverford in first place in the Centennial Conference. Haverford opened up a 4-2 lead at halftime because the team had good offensive possessions and executed the defense well, Murphy said. Sophomore attackman Max Hjelm led Haverford’s offense with two goals and one assist.

Haverford was able to stifle Washington’s offense, which averages 10.25 goals per game. “We tried to minimize as many quality shots from their midfield as we could,” Murphy said. Freshman goalkeeper Joe Banno had 15 saves in the win. The team’s defensive success can be attributed to the unit trusting each other and playing well together, Murphy said.

Murphy said he stressed to his team that the team needs to continue winning games. If not the victory over Washington will not be as important.

Washington fell to No. 19 after a loss to Gettysburg April 4.

CHESTERTOWN – For the second time this spring, Washington has lost to a lesser opponent – at least according to those who calculate the weekly polls.

This time it was No. 14-ranked Haverford that knocked off Washington, which entered Saturday night’s game here as the eighth-best team in Division III.

The Fords asserted themselves with four unanswered goals in the first half and coasted to an 8-5 victory – their first in the 20-game series. Haverford, which improved to 3-0 in the Centennial Conference, took over sole possession of first in the nine-school league.

“Haverford was impressive. We were beaten in areas we are not accustomed to being beaten, face-offs and in the goal..." Washington coach J.B. Clarke wrote in an e-mail Sunday morning. ~ "Haverford leads league after win at Washington," MyEasternShoreMaryland, Wednesday, April 1, 2009
