Inside Lacrosse Magazine preview of Rochester Rattlers-Charlotte Hounds 4/30/16: “A potentially serious injury to Matt Miller is also a concern and Joel White will be out again for at least one more game. Rochester’s team defense is better than most squads, but their ability to stop individual plays from big-time ballers makes them vulnerable to the human smart bomb known as [MLL 2015 Rookie of the Year] Joey Sankey…Unfortunately, Rochester will be without their quickest poles for this match up.”

The Rattlers were missing defensemen Matt Miller (who shut down the Lizards’ Rob Pannell in game 1 until his injury), Joel White (NLL), Mike Manley (ACL) and Will Koshansky, who also contributed a goal in game 1. Starting goalie Joe Banno made 14 saves in his 60 minutes,   stopping 4 of Mike Chanenchuk's 6 shots on goal, 4 of Mike Sawyer's 7 shots and 4 of John Haus's 5 shots.   Playing four newly-signed players against the Hounds and producing 5 fewer points than in game 1, the Rattlers dropped to 0-2 with the 11-14 decision.

GAME VIDEO REPLAY at ESPN3.com here

Rattlers Head Coach Tim Soudan, on Facebook post-game: "It wasn't the outcome we wanted or need this time of year. We were at times really good and others a turnover machine and you can't give teams multiple possessions and expect to win."

As of May 1, 2016, Banno was tied for fourth in the league in goals against average (14.00) and ranked sixth in save percentage (.500).

From the Rattlers website: "With Joe Banno in net, the Rochester Rattlers had all positive signs to start the game. We talked to Joe after the game and here's what he said: 'It was a tough game and we didn't play our best. That being said, there are definitely positives that we can take from the game moving forward. Our man down defense was incredible, holding the Hounds scoreless on their five powerplay opportunities. We also played some of our best lacrosse in the 4th quarter. We surrendered no goals and scored five points of our own. While nobody likes taking a
loss into a bye week, we will move past it as a team and build on our successes going into Boston.'" -- "Rattlers Fall to 0-2 After Rain Delay, Loss in Charlotte," by Brad Bialy

Alumni Update: Joe Banno '12 Earns Start for Rochester Rattlers:

"In his start for the Rattlers, Banno made 14 saves during his 60 minutes in goal, including a critical point-blank, man-down save during Rochester's fourth quarter rally where the Rattlers scored five unanswered goals. He did not allow any two-point goals and picked up three groundballs during the game. The Rattlers also played without three key defensemen in the eventual 14-11 defeat. After starting his team's second game of the season, Banno currently ranks sixth of twelve goalies in the league in save percentage and goals against average with .500 and 14.00, tied with Ohio Machine's Adam Fullerton, Rattlers backup Jason LaShomb and Atlanta Blaze's Adam Ghitelman. Banno earned the start after primary goalie John Galloway was unable to make the game due to a conflict with his college coaching responsibilities outside of the Rattlers."

Coach Soudan and ESPN Commentators:
ANNOUNCER: "Couch Soudan, you made a switch - you put in Joe Banno, and he really stepped up big at the end there in goal."

COACH: "Yeah, you know, he's a big body, he takes away a lot of pop, and they had those 5 two-pointers in the 1st half and a lot of them were high so we just had to make a decision there, you know LaShomb played well, he made 13 saves, but it was just something we felt we needed for the defense. We extended much better in the 2nd half out onto their shooters, I don't even know how many two-pointers they got off in the 2nd half. It was a big character half for us, we really stepped up and it doesn't show on the scoreboard but we're proud of what the guys did in the second half."

ANNOUNCER: "Defensively your team really stepped up, it seems this year more than last year, your defense has gotten a little bit tighter, you've got Ridgeway back there, you've got Randall back there, and now you've got Big Banno back there as well, as we see him signing some autographs there (onscreen) for the fans here...you told me yourself that, even though he's so big in net—he's 6-4", 275—he moves well for a big man."

COACH: "Yeah he moves really well, he's quick, he got to a couple low shots, it's one of the things we saw in training camp...And one of the things that he's very good at is he really dictates what goes on in the defensive end."

GAME 1 COMMENTATORS:

ANNOUNCER 1: Looks like a goalie change for Rochester— as Joe Banno comes in. Joe Banno, the 6-foot-4 275 pounder from Haverford [College], from Monroe, CT. Third-Team All-American while at Haverford. He's a very large individual but one of the things that Coach Soudan said about Banno was that although he's very big, he's extremely nimble and quick on his feet.

ANNOUNCER 2: Quick hands, quick feet, takes up a lot of space...you know, he's gotta play his angles well here, which is really gonna help him out but he does have that quickness of his hands and his feet to get to the ball and make some saves.
...
ANNOUNCER 1: Dixon being watched by DeNapoli, Dixon bounces one, and the save is made by Banno, that's two in a row for the big man, from Haverford.
...
Mackrides turns it around for Hunt- TWO-POINT SHOT fired, SAVED!
...
Another great save by Banno, hugging the post (mandown save).
...
Squirting around...Brooks...pops open to open space...goal line extended...Rubeor...Inside, quick stick from Hunt and a better save by Banno! [2nd ANNOUNCER]: Pretty good execution on that play, they got a good look by Hunt, but Banno's there to make a great save.
...
ANNOUNCER 1: Roll fake from Dixon...comes inside... spin move from Mackrides...looking for Rubeor...finds him on the bounce pass...to the top—Dixon- TWO POINT SHOT—-BANNO AGAIN! CLOSES the door! [2nd ANNOUNCER] Great save, Banno gets down low for that one, that was a low and away shot two-pointer, Banno did a great job of tracking it, getting low, getting the stick in front of it. ***(SEE PHOTO here)*** [1st ANNOUNCER] Joe Banno has come in, in relief of Jason LaShomb, done a terrific job thus far in this game, he will have some black and blue marks tomorrow.
...
The goaltender Banno, certainly putting on a clinic, on his own island.
...
One of the other things Tim Soudan said about Joe Banno is how well he calls the defense, from the goaltender's spot, he's active in the net, not afraid to let people know where the ball's coming from, who's hot, etc.

INSIDE LACROSSE VIDEO INTERVIEW after first-ever Centennial Conference Championship, beating #2-nationally-ranked Gettysburg at Gettysburg, 5/2/10

INSIDE LACROSSE, 2/21/2012: "Goalie Joe Banno, who is as good as anybody in the country, will keep his team in every single game this year and he did just that on Saturday night. The big man (he stands at 6-foot-4, 265 lbs.) collected 17 saves while facing a 48-shot barrage from the 'Stangs."

Salisbury Needs Overtime to Down Haverford in NCAA Quarterfinals, 2010: "...A barn-burner that was tied eight times...Haverford goalie Joe Banno registered six of his 11 saves in the fourth period."

Salibury Staves Off Haverford, 12-11, NCAA.com: "It was undoubtedly one of the most heated men's lacrosse games played at Sea Gull Stadium this season. In an NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse quarterfinal contest between the No. 2 Salisbury University Sea Gulls and the No. 11 Haverford Fords which was tied eight times, the Sea Gulls came from behind and prevailed in a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory."

Inside Lacrosse, 2010: "Haverford takes first-ever Centennial title with win over Gettysburg: ...Joe Banno stood tall in goal all day for the Fords finishing with 15 saves in the win..."

...after upsetting #5-ranked Dickinson in OT in the semis: Inside Lacrosse- April 30, 2010 and May 4, 2010: "Haverford goalie Joe Banno, who posted a career-best 20 saves in the last meeting between the two teams, registered double-digits again with 14 saves in Friday's win."

Inside Lacrosse, May 18, 2010: "Haverford continues to play confident lacrosse, running by [then-#7-ranked] Dickinson 13-5 [in NCAA tournament second round]...Dickinson could not get going offensive and credit Haverford's Joe Banno for another tough effort in cage, stopping 13/18 (72%). Haverford heads to Salisbury [for the Quarterfinals]."..."The Haverford defense and goalie Joe Banno, who finished with 13 saves, limited the Red Devils to their lowest scoring output this year since an 11-5 regular season loss to Gettysburg College."

Inside Lacrosse Magazine 2012 NCAA Preview issue, Feb. 2012, pages 104-106, "DIII Player Preview: GOALIES: Union's Sean Aaron vs. Haverford's Joe Banno: Sean Aaron is a big, fundamental goalie who managed to stop an amazing number of the shots he faced last season. Joe Banno is an even bigger goalie who was able to stop an even higher percentage of the shots he saw last year:"

"Banno's defining moment came in the second half of his sophomore year. After suffering five blemishes, the Black Squirrels needed to string together a serious run to make the playoffs, and did so with the help of their reliable netminder. In a five-game span in April, Haverford won three overtime games [one vs. #5 Dickinson] leading up to the Centennial final against [#2-ranked] Gettysburg. The program's first conference championship is due largely in part to the remarkable play of Banno, who corralled 15 saves in the victory.

"For any goalie that has size more synonymous with a defensive lineman, positioning will be a tremendous asset to put you ahead of the pack...Banno does an excellent job making opposing shooters think hard about where to shoot...There isn't much room for improvement in Banno's shot-stopping...he has been a brick wall in goal for the Black Squirrels, starting every game of his career..."

Lacrosse Magazine, Jan. 30, 2012, "Haverford's Banno Redefining the 'Big Goalie'", by Jac Coyne:
"When he graduated [high school, Banno] was a 6-foot-4, 265-pound stopper with the quickness and instincts of a goalie half his size.
...
"'He's a pretty cerebral guy,' said Haverford head coach Colin Bathory, who was an assistant coach for the Black Squirrels while recruiting Banno. 'He sees shooting angles. He knows where some players are more likely to shoot than others, and he positions himself to get his stick ready for saves in those spots. He can also make the in-tight, low-to-high stick-fake saves. He's got the reactions, as well. That's what makes him unique: he's more than just the big guy you throw in net. He's a big guy in net, but can play the position like the elite goalies do.'

"'It took a little time for Salisbury to get used to him,' Bathory said. 'They were accustomed to getting a lot of those skip lanes, wing-to-wing passes and shots on the backside. Joe's feet are very good. He steps across the cage very deftly. They had to force themselves to change some of their plan as they got used to where the shooting angles were on the field against a goalie like Joe.'"

Inside Lacrosse, Dec. 13, 2011

Lacrosse Magazine, Aug. 26, 2011: "Defense Returning: The Squirrels were a stingy bunch, and with the return of Joe Banno (65.0 sv%) and two poles in front of him, they should be equally efficient this season...Stud Factor: Banno is a game-changer in net and scores big stud points."

Lacrosse Magazine, Mar. 10, 2011: "...there's a 6-foot-4, 265-pound reason I will not take Denison in this contest. I'm starting to believe Joe Banno could be the best goaltender in the country, especially after his clutch, 19-save performance against Cabrini."

Inside Lacrosse, April 9, 2009: "Haverford Snags Historic Victory"

The Delaware County Daily Times, May 10, 2009: "Salisbury head coach Jim Berkman said...'it wasn’t like we didn’t do some good things in the first half. We had 28 shots and they had 10. I know it was a 6-4 game, but their goalie played out of his mind.'...The Gulls knotted the game but struggled to build a substantial lead against 6-4, 263-pound freshman goalie Joe Banno. The big guy made seven point blank saves in the first quarter alone to keep the Fords within 3-1 entering the second frame."

Lacrosse Magazine, May 8, 2009: "Jim Berkman thought the Gulls had a shot at a home seed in this one, but he's comfortable with the pairing, especially since he was able to take a peek at the Black Squirrels during the Centennial tourney. Catching the Salisbury coach's eye was Joe Banno, the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Haverford goalie who alters every angle he plays."
